JK Environmental employee Matt Brauckmann presented his geochemical research this past weekend at the 2017 Geological Society of America, Northeastern Joint Section Meeting in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The research was focused on performing chemical analysis of surface water along Fishing Creek in Columbia County, Pennsylvania. Samples were taken at several points along the length of the creek and in-situ data including turbidity, pH, conductivity, temperature, and dissolved oxygen was recorded. The samples were then tested for alkalinity and acidity using HACH methods. Lastly, the samples were run on an IC and ICP for anions and cations, and run on an ICP-OES for metals. This research and its data were found to be very pertinent to many organizations, including the USGS who have been studying the Susquehanna and its tributaries for different chemical compounds since they have been observing a recent influx of fish that exhibit intersex characteristics. Fishing Creek is an important waterway in the area. Its watershed covers 385 square miles over three counties in Northeastern Pennsylvania and it is a tributary of the Susquehanna River. It is also an important waterway way for several species of fish, including Brook Trout, Rainbow Trout, and Brown Trout. It is also a large source of drinking water for Columbia County. Matt is a 2016 graduate of Bloomsburg University with a degree in Professional Geology and a minor in GIS/Spatial Analysis and performed the research as part of an Aqueous Geochemistry class. The full abstract of the research can be found here and the poster that was presented at the conference can be viewed here.
